PREMIERE: Everything Everything - MY KZ, YR BF (Memory Tapes Remix)

RCRD LBL 30 Jul 2010, 5:30 pm CEST

Memory Tapes continues his quest to remix seemingly every band in existence with this new one for twitchy British dance outfit Everything Everything. If Dam-Funk made bumpers for Nick Jr., this is what they would sound like–squishy-like-stuffed-animals playtime funk. Everything Everything's debut album, Man Alive, is out August 30.

From Curated -

On view through September 26, 2010, at Princeton Art Museum, “Starburst, the first-ever museum survey of the “New Color Photography” in the 1970s, stars 18 artists who fast-forwarded their medium out of its black-and-white past and put it at the center of contemporary art. The exhibition features generous bodies of work by eighteen artists, from the still-prominent, such as Stephen Shore, William Eggleston, Jan Groover, and Joel Sternfeld, to key figures of the period, including Eve Sonneman, Neal Slavin, John Pfahl, and Barbara Kasten.”

The photographs are stunning, and the exhibition also includes a web component that is well worth visiting.

Head to Curated for more images and information.

RCRD LBL 30 Jul 2010, 4:30 pm CEST

On Drake's make-it-or-quit mixtape, So Far Gone (he made it), Bun B came through with a crucial co-sign, blessing the young spitter with a scene-stealing verse on the album's hardest cut, "Uptown." Things have changed a bit since then–Drake's famous, platinum, stanky rich, but doing the right thing pulling verse and hook duty for one of hip-hop's last living legends. Bun let "Put It Down" go for free yesterday on Twitter, but you can pay him back next Tuesday when his new album Trill OG drops.

First Look | Mighty Mac Spring/Summer 2011

Selectism - mighty-mac-spring-2011-01

Bringing heritage brands back from the dead is nothing new (especially in these times) but there’s some folks who know how to do it right. Coming from the same stable as Rocky Mountain Featherbed, Mighty Mac is a traditional boating clothing company, who’ve been resuscitated by a Japanese company (who know a thing or two about amazing repro products). We spotted this over at Capsule, so look for it to start appearing in stores early next year.

The boat parka (complete with detachable bag) is a favourite of ours, but the whole collection’s worthy of a look – which you’ll be able to do after the leap.

Mindboggling Reveals: Latest West Chelsea Starchitecture Peeled and Polished

Curbed NY 30 Jul 2010, 4:12 pm CEST

The waiting game is over! Maybe it was the endless heat or the full moon that caused the cosmic shift, but the construction netting at 200 Eleventh Avenue has finally come down. After being hidden behind a veil for the last two years, these 19 stories of super-luxury condos (and their "en-suite Sky Garage") clad in swooping stainless steel by Annabelle Selldorf and her team at Selldorf Architects are getting showing off their shiny assets.

Up high a full facade of oversized multi-paned windows look west over the new bowl o' grass at Chelsea Cove and the hinterlands beyond the Hudson. A stack of terraces face east, with views of sunrises and the skyscrapers of Midtown. As of May only one unit was still available, priced at $6.23 million, but that was recently chopped to $5.95 million. (Fashion designer Domenico Dolce bought two penthouses for $29 million.) If that's still beyond doable, vicarious thrills are available via video at Vica Design, where a fly-through of a duplex is just a click away. So, the debate can finally begin: Better than Jean Nouvel's 100 Eleventh a few blocks south? · 200 Eleventh Avenue [Official Site] · 200 Eleventh Avenue coverage [Curbed]

Review: Night Gallery – Constant Struggle

Mishka Bloglin 30 Jul 2010, 4:05 pm CEST

Night Gallery - Constant Struggle (2010) [Rainbow Body] // Grade: A-

I will not say Night Gallery sound like Depeche Mode. I will not say Night Gallery sound like Depeche Mode. I will not say…ok, it’s a comparison you just cannot avoid on the duo’s soon-to-be-released (August 10) LP, Constant Struggle. I earnestly hope the public allow themselves to dive into the eight tracks contained within, and take the time to look deeper than the vocal tones. Those willing to enter Night Gallery’s fold with an open ear, will be rewarded with lush, astutely prepared instrumentation that draws from the glory days of dark-tinted pop.

Constant Struggle is not as much an homage to Music for the Masses-era Depeche Mode, as it is a blending of references already drawn from in members Aaron David Ross and Adam Griffin’s other musical projects. As a collection, the tracks lean closest to definition as synthpop, bolstered with the spirit of the New Romantics. But in the ambling, rhythmic industrial pulse of “Real Normal” and the throaty, low-pitched words of “Sex Curse” you’re tipped to that same sense of cinematic forebodence heard in Ross’ work with Gatekeeper. And while Golden Birthday, the Chicago-based outfit Griffin tours with, is often followed by the genre assignment “lo-fi pop”, the keyboard synthpop that forms that base level of their sound is not far off from the less brooding of Constant Struggle‘s selections (“Mary Bell”, “Fever Dreamer”).

This balance of lighthearted, early electronic pop peppered with darker colors provides Constant Struggle with a framework that allows for endless variety. “Wild Palms” pairs breezy tropicalia with swaying vocals, arriving a product of the Pet Shop Boys influence. On the opposite side of the sonic spectrum, “Too Many Men” is beat-driven, assisted by elongated, heavy words. But the most interesting element in Night Gallery’s mix is that through all their many reference points drawn from the past, they still imbue a sense on nowness to the album. Both the title track and “Fever Dreamer” present themselves vocally as thoroughly modern slices of electronic pop.

If at any point in your life you’ve spent time immersed in the genres of darkwave, synthpop or new wave…or, if you just really love Depeche Mode, Night Gallery is a name that needs to be on your radar.

The church says it can't afford the necessary repairs if the building is landmarked, and neighbors don't want to see that bizarre eight-story addition plopped on top. But since that proposal surfaced, a rezoning has made an addition that size impossible, and the church's dean admits it was an "absurd" idea. [The Villager]

The door was coated, the bucket (a large drywall sized bucket) was laying there next to the disaster, a couple orange cones were placed gingerly... The entire east side of the block stank. I thought you'd want to know. That's not a diss." [CurbedWire Inbox]
